The ADR and IATA regulations governing the transport of infectious substances by air or road are based on UN recommendations. Category A (UN 2814 and UN 2900) comprises substances capable of causing permanent disability or fatal illness in humans or animals. Infectious substances not classified in Category A fall under Category B – UN 3373 “BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE CATEGORY B”,

UN 3373 packaging consists of three layers:

primary packaging containing the material
sturdy, leak-proof secondary packaging (Speci-Gard or Speci-Bag) to protect one or more primary containers in the event of a leak
an absorbent material capable of absorbing the liquid in the event of a leak
an expanded polystyrene box
outer packaging to protect its contents
a security label guaranteeing the integrity of the packaging
